Calling All Travelers! New Passport Rules

There is good news for those with international travel plans! Effective February 1, there are four noteworthy changes to the process for obtaining passport applications. Take a look!

  1. Two New Online Passport Application Forms.
At www.travel.state.gov there will be two links for application forms. One link will allow the citizens to download and print a blank copy of the form. The other link will direct them to a Passport Application Wizard that will assist them in choosing, filling out, and printing the correct 2D barcode version of the form from the website, as well as estimating the payment.

  2. Passport Cards for North & Central America Travel.
Citizens will now have the option of applying for a Passport Book or a Passport Card. The Passport Card may be used only for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

  3. The processing fee has gone down yet the actual passport has gone up!
The processing fee payable to the acceptance facilities has been lowered to $25. Passports vary in price depending on the type. Please see the MercuryNews article about passport rule changes.

  4. The age has gone up for two-parent consent for minors.
Starting Feb. 1st, two parent consent will be required for all minors under the age of 16 as previously applied to children under 14.
