Drop in property values keeping tax assessors busy

SAN FRANCISCO—The drop in real estate values across the Bay Area is keeping one group of individuals especially busy.County tax assessors are reporting that they're being flooded with requests for property tax reductions.

A Contra Costa County tax official says his office is getting about 500 calls a day from people requesting to have their tax assessments reduced.

In Alameda County, tax officials say they've received about 2,000 requests for property tax reductions in the past several weeks.

The assessors office in San Mateo County isn't quite as busy, with the county assessor saying his office is receiving 25 inquiries a day about property tax reductions.

San Francisco seems to be going against the trend, with tax officials saying they're seeing a decline in requests for property tax reductions.
